Chalky Walls and White Powder (Efflorescence): Causes and How to Fix Before Painting
Chalky walls leave powder on your finger because old paint has broken down. They need cleaning and a penetrating sealer before repainting. Efflorescence is white, crystal-like salt pushed out of cement by moisture. Find and fix the moisture first, brush off the salts, then use an efflorescence-resistant sealer. Painting straight over either leads to peeling.
Chalking vs efflorescence
| Chalking | Efflorescence | |
|---|---|---|
| Looks like | Fine powder across the painted surface | White fluffy or crusty crystals, often in patches |
| Cause | Paint film breaking down (age, UV, cheap paint, over-thinning) | Moisture carrying salts out of cement or plaster |
| Common spots | Exterior walls, old interior paint | Damp walls, near bathrooms, new plaster, basements |
| Fix | Clean, then penetrating sealer, then repaint | Fix moisture, remove salts, sealer, repaint |
Quick test
- Rub the wall with a dark cloth or your finger. Even powder means chalking.
- Look for white crystals that come back after brushing. That’s efflorescence.
- Press a strip of tape firmly and pull it off. Paint flakes on the tape mean poor adhesion.
How to fix chalky walls
- Wash or wipe the wall to remove loose powder, then let it dry
- Apply a penetrating wall sealer that binds the chalky surface. Nippon describes Vinilex 5170 as preventing chalking. See sealer guide
- Apply two topcoats
How to fix efflorescence
- Find and stop the moisture: leaks, seepage, failed waterproofing
- Let the wall dry thoroughly
- Brush off salts dry. Don’t wash with lots of water, which brings more salts out
- Apply an alkali- and efflorescence-resistant sealer
- Repaint
If efflorescence keeps returning, you still have a moisture problem. Painting won’t solve it.

FAQ
Why are my walls chalky after painting?
Usually poor-quality or over-thinned paint, painting over an unsealed chalky surface, or paint that has aged.
Is efflorescence harmful?
The salts themselves aren’t harmful, but they signal moisture, which can lead to peeling paint and mould.
Can I paint over efflorescence?
Not until the moisture is fixed, the salts are removed, and the wall is sealed.
