How spray painting works

  1. Doors and panels are removed, labelled and often taken to a workshop
  2. Surfaces are degreased and sanded so the new coating grips
  3. A bonding primer is applied, which is essential on laminate
  4. Two or more coats of spray paint (often 2K polyurethane for kitchens) are sprayed in a dust-controlled area
  5. Panels are cured, then reinstalled with hinges adjusted

Workshop spraying gives the smoothest finish and keeps fumes out of your home. On-site spraying is possible for built-ins but needs careful masking and ventilation.

When it’s worth it, and when it isn’t

Worth it: cabinet boxes are sturdy, doors aren’t swollen, and you want a new colour for much less than new carpentry.

Not worth it: water damage has swollen the board, hinges are pulling out, or you want to change the layout. In those cases new carpentry is the better spend.

Furniture painting FAQ

Can you spray paint laminate kitchen cabinets?

Yes, with proper sanding and a bonding primer. Without these steps, paint on laminate can peel within months.

How long does kitchen cabinet spray painting take?

Usually 3 to 5 days including curing. Many painters take doors away and leave the cabinet boxes in place so you can still use the kitchen.

Is spray painting durable for kitchens?

A 2K polyurethane finish is hard-wearing and wipeable. Avoid harsh scrubbing pads and wipe up spills quickly to keep it looking good.
