Nippon Weatherbond vs Weatherbond AlgaeGuard: Which Exterior Paint for Singapore Homes?
Weatherbond is Nippon’s high-performance exterior paint: fungus resistant, breathable, anti-carbonation, low-sheen, about 9 m²/L. Weatherbond AlgaeGuard adds enhanced resistance to fungal and algal growth and anti-streak properties. Choose AlgaeGuard for shaded, damp or tree-lined walls, which describes many Singapore landed homes. Standard Weatherbond is fine for sunny, well-drained walls and balconies.

Which to choose
- Shaded walls, near trees or greenery, north-facing, recurring black or green stains: AlgaeGuard
- Sunny, well-drained walls: Weatherbond
- Condo balcony walls: Weatherbond is often enough. Check MCST colour rules first
- Walls with dampness or seepage: fix the water problem first. Consider waterproofing or AquaGuard
The exterior system that lasts
- High-pressure wash and fungicidal treatment
- Repair cracks with a flexible filler
- Exterior sealer (for example Vinilex 5170). See sealer guide
- Two coats of exterior topcoat
Skipping washing and sealer is the main reason exterior paint fails within a few years.
Cost
Exterior repaints for terrace and semi-detached homes typically cost $2,500 to $8,000, with scaffolding often extra. AlgaeGuard costs more per litre than standard Weatherbond, but on shaded walls it can delay repainting. See exterior painting.
FAQ
Is Weatherbond suitable for Singapore weather?
It’s designed as a high-performance exterior paint with fungus resistance and a breathable film, and it’s widely used on Singapore homes.
Can Weatherbond be used indoors?
Nippon lists it for internal and external masonry. Interior paints are usually better for living spaces because of their finish and odour.
Do I need sealer under Weatherbond?
For new, porous, chalky or problem walls, yes. A sealer improves adhesion and alkali resistance.
